Microsoft (MSFT) has licensed dozens of smart-phone related patents from Acacia Research (ACTG) and Japan-based Access Co., the Wall Street Journal reports.
The Journal said Microsoft confirmed that it had licensed the patents, but declined to disclosed terms. Access in 2005 bought PalmSource, which created the Palm operating system. (Palm spun off PalmSource in 2003.) Acacia, which is licensing the patents on behalf of Access, told the Journal that the deal covers 74 patents.
The piece notes that some of the patents were involved in a pending lawsuit Acacia filed in March in federal court in Tyler, Texas, against Apple (AAPL), Research In Motion (RIMM), Samsung, Motorola (MOT) and other smart phone makers. The case alleges infringement of patents covering e-mail synchronization and other basic functionality.
