The rare earth metals are actually not always that rare! Some of the rare earth metals are among the most abundant in the earth’s crust. They are often incredibly difficult to extract, however. There are fifteen rare earth metals that reside on the periodic table of the elements as the lanthanoids. Scandium and Yttrium are also rare earth metals. Rare earth metals have special properties, such as catalytic, chemical, electrical, metallurgical, nuclear, magnetic or optical, making rare earth metals valuable for application in an ever increasing host of advanced technological functions.
Many Rare earth metals applications are highly specific and substitutes are inferior or unknown:
Rare earth metals are used in metallurgy as an alloying agent to desulphurise steels, as a nodularising agent in ductile iron, as lighter flints and as alloying agents to improve the properties of superalloys and alloys of magnesium, aluminium and titanium.
Rare-earth elements are used in the nuclear industry in control rods, as dilutants, and in shielding, detectors and counters.
Rare metals lower the friction on power lines, thus cutting electricity leakage.
American Video Teleconferencing Corp. believes the rare earths industry is where it wants to maintain a very strong focus and is looking to expand its holdings. AVOT is normally known for its business and efforts of exploration in Rare Earth Elements. According to the Company, it aggressively continues to search world-wide for opportunities in Precious, Base and Rare Earths metal projects in its future strategies.
