AAPL: DigiTimes Speculates on Cheaper iPad

DigiTimes’s James Wang this morning reiterates a claim the site has made before, namely that there will be two different versions introduced this year of Apple’s (AAPL) iPad, carrying different screen resolutions, citing anonymous sources from the components supply chain.

Wang speculates on whether pricing will be lower for an “entry-level” iPad that might use the existing screen resolution of iPad 2, rather than an enhanced resolution. He opines that a $299 price could upset competitors’ plans to focus on pricing of tablets.

And in case you missed it, in somewhat related news, AllThingsD’s Kara Swisher wrote late yesterday afternoon that anonymous sources have told her Apple will host an event in New York City at the end of January to discuss something “media-related,” though it will not be an iPad introduction, she writes.

TechCrunch’s Alexia Tsotsis extended the story with her own sourcing later on, writing that the event will focus on publishing and e-books, and, one would assume, Apple’s own iBooks effort.

Apple shares today are up $6.15, or 1.5%, at $411.11.
